    Microsoft Defender vs. McAfee: Plans

Microsoft Defender has just a single plan and comes pre-installed on Windows PCs. It includes a firewall and real-time virus defense, and protects against ransomware by allowing you to control access to important folders so hackers can’t encrypt them. Defender is the default Windows security app, but it can also operate in “passive mode” if you use a third-party security vendor. It only covers a single device but is available on all new Windows PCs. It cannot be used on Android, iOS, or other non-Windows consumer devices but is offered as an enterprise security solution.

McAfee has no free plan. Its Antivirus Plus offers basic malware protection for one device for $84.99 annually after a promotional period. Upgrades include additional features. The Plus plan at $109.99 includes identity monitoring, a device protection score, and an unlimited virtual private network (VPN) for five devices. Other plans add data cleanup, parental controls, and identity theft coverage. McAfee also has several options under its Total Protection package and a Gamer Security feature designed to protect against threats without impacting performance.
